Police are hunting for Arab Malaysian Bank founder’s killer, who is known as Sei Ngan Chai (Cantonese for ‘four-eyed’ guy).
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified the main suspect behind the murder of Arab Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi and arrested a 44-year-old man believed to be the driver of the getaway taxi.
Photographs of the suspected killer caught on CCTV near the Kuan Yin Temple in Lorong Ceylon here have been distributed to the media.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police believed the man known as Sei Ngan Chai (four-eyed guy in Cantonese) was still in the city, most probably in the Taman Maluri area.
“We strongly believe he is the one who shot Najadi and hope the release of his picture will help us catch him,” he told the media at the state police headquarters here yesterday.
SAC Ku said the taxi driver was arrested in Sri Petaling at about 9pm on Tuesday, a day after the 75-year-old Najadi was shot dead at the temple’s car park.
“Initial investigations showed that the driver dropped off the suspect in Jalan Yap Ah Loy after picking him up near the temple. He claimed that the suspect was a regular passenger,” he said.
Police now believe only one man is responsible for the murder, contrary to earlier reports that three people were involved.
“Witnesses claimed that three people were waiting for Najadi. Our investigations so far point to one person but we will explore all possibilities,” he said.
Based on the bullets recovered from the deceased’s body, police believe the murder weapon was a 9mm automatic pistol.
SAC Ku said police had also recorded a statement from the man whom Najadi met at the temple for a land deal.
He urged anyone with information to call the Kuala Lumpur Serious Crime Unit at 03-2146 0685, the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or go to the nearest police station.
Najadi’s 49-year-old Malaysian wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, was injured in the arm and leg in the shooting.
Najadi was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery here on Tuesday.
