KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has refuted allegations that the original price of RON 97 petrol is cheaper than RON 95.
Those making the claims had not taken into account the 70 sen in sales tax on RON 95 petrol, which has been waived by the Government, minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday.
He clarified that the original prices of RON 95 and RON 97 petrol were RM3.18 and RM3.48 respectively.
“The false information is being used by the Opposition to confuse and mislead the people,” he said after opening the 10th Global Indian Festival at the Mid Valley shopping centre here.
He was commenting on the allegations, shared on social networking websites and blogs, that RON 97 petrol was actually cheaper than RON 95.
Internet users had shared a photo of an information sheet, displayed at a petrol station, which compared the original prices of the fuel to the subsidised prices.
The price of RON 95 petrol has been kept steady at RM1.90 a litre. The Government raised the price of premium petrol RON 97 by 20 sen a litre to RM2.90 a litre on May 5 last year.
It was reduced to RM2.80 per litre from 6th Jun 2012.
